Controlled groups make sure that organizations do not take advantage of employee retirement plans by privileging only some employees. Here are a few simple definitions of the main sorts of controlled groups such as; Parent/ Subsidiary, Brother/Sister, and Combined.

Parent-Subsidiary Controlled Group

A parent-subsidiary controlled group is when an organization has at least 80% ownership in another company. Consider this case as a big fish swallowing a smaller one. For example, if Romeo Corporation owns Omega Corporation by 80%, they are said to form a parent-subsidiary controlled group.

Brother-Sister Controlled Group

A brother-sister controlled group is when five or fewer persons, estates, or trusts own at least 80% of two more companies, and those companies have the identical owner for over 50%. In other words, think about two companies that have exactly the same set of people who own them; this is called a brother-sister controlled group.

Combined Group

A combined group consists of firms that belong to both a parent-subsidiary category and also a brother-sister collective. For instance, suppose there are three corporations named alpha company which owns beta company and others belonging to the same individuals; then it becomes part of a combined group.

Why Are Controlled Groups Important?

Controlled groups guarantee that employee benefit programs are fair by preventing companies from concentrating benefits on certain employees or categories only. By treating all employers within the associated corporate entity as one employer, it helps create egalitarian and non-discriminatory worker benefits.
